Gynecomastia Surgery in Fulshear & Sugar Land, TX

Men care about their appearance too. The male beauty standard often revolves around a well-defined chest with a masculine contour. However, it’s not uncommon for males of any age to experience gynecomastia: a condition characterized by enlarged or overdeveloped breast tissue.

Though it isn’t rare, gynecomastia can cause a man to feel self-conscious, insecure, anxious, or embarrassed, in and out of clothes. He may avoid certain activities, like swimming, running, dating, or intimacy. While this condition may resolve on its own in adolescence, for adults it often does not resolve even with weight loss and exercise. Gynecomastia surgery addresses these issues and offers an instant and impactful result. This procedure is one of Dr. Hua’s specialties.

What Is Gynecomastia?

Gynecomastia, often colloquially referred to as “man boobs,” is a common male breast disorder where glandular and adipose tissue is overdeveloped. This is often due to an imbalance of testosterone and estrogen hormones, which is why gynecomastia frequently occurs in newborns, adolescents, and adult men over the age of 50.

Both males and females have breast glands, but typically, those in the male breast are nonfunctional. With gynecomastia, breast gland tissue is enlarged and may grow unevenly. In true gynecomastia, a lump is usually present and feels firmer than the rest of the fat in the area.

Enlarged male breasts can also be due to excess fatty tissue instead of glandular tissue. This is known as pseudogynecomastia, but it can cause psychological distress nonetheless. In either case, working out, losing weight or changes in diet may not help.

In addition to hormone imbalance, gynecomastia can be the result of various other factors, including genetics, obesity, alcoholism, Marijuana use, chronic disease, or the use of certain medications and drugs.

Am I a Candidate for Gynecomastia Surgery?

There are several factors to consider when determining candidacy for gynecomastia surgery. You may be a good candidate if you:

  • Are in good health
  • Don’t smoke or use drugs
  • Are of a relatively normal weight
  • Have realistic expectations
  • Are bothered by the size of your breast tissue
  • Cannot correct gynecomastia through alternative medical treatments

Ideally, the patient’s breast development should be stabilized before surgery is considered. Adolescents can benefit from gynecomastia surgery but may require a future procedure if the development of breast tissues continues into early adulthood.

How Is Gynecomastia Surgery Performed?

Gynecomastia is an outpatient procedure that may be performed under intravenous sedation or general anesthesia. Dr. Hua will recommend the best option for you.

There are two techniques for gynecomastia surgery: liposuction and excision. One or both may be utilized.

Liposuction

If stubborn fatty tissue is the primary cause of gynecomastia, liposuction alone may be sufficient.

The basic procedure involves making several small incisions and inserting a cannula. Excess fat is then loosened and removed with vacuum suction. There are a variety of liposuction techniques–the most appropriate of which will be determined prior to your procedure.

Excision

Excision techniques are used when gynecomastia correction calls for glandular breast tissue and excess skin to be removed. Excision techniques can also reduce areola size or reposition the nipple. Incision placement is determined on a case-by-case basis.

What Procedures Can Be Combined With Gynecomastia Surgery?

For a more comprehensive transformation of the torso, gynecomastia can be combined with other procedures, such as:

  • Abdominoplasty: Combining abdominoplasty with gynecomastia surgery can help restore masculine chest and abdominal contours for the most impactful, aesthetically pleasing upper body enhancement.
  • Liposuction: Excess or stubborn fat in the abdomen, back, or flanks can be removed with liposuction, and serves as an excellent complement to gynecomastia surgery results.
  • 3D Lipo: This non-invasive procedure uses technology to eliminate stubborn localized fat and enhance muscular definition for a more sculpted torso overall.

What Is Gynecomastia Surgery Recovery Like?

Directly following surgery, dressings or bandages will be applied to your incisions. You may be required to wear a special garment to reinforce your new chest contour as it heals. A temporary drainage tube may be placed to redirect excess blood or fluid that collects at the surgery site.

Dr. Hua will provide you with specific post-operative instructions for optimal recovery. It’s important to carefully follow these instructions to avoid complications.

Two weeks following surgery, most men feel comfortable returning to normal activity. It can take four weeks to be cleared for exercise. The recovery process is usually complete at around six weeks.

What Results Can I Expect From Gynecomastia Surgery?

A full recovery from gynecomastia surgery can take three to six months. Results are immediately visible, although post-surgical swelling may be present for several weeks.

Scars from gynecomastia surgery are permanent but may be concealed in the natural contours of the chest. Incision lines will fade over time, especially with proper scar care.

The most substantial result frequently reported by patients is an improved quality of life. Most men enjoy a renewed self-image as a result of their improved upper body. Clothes fit better, and they can participate in activities they once avoided, such as swimming in public, baring their chest in hot weather, or dating.

In some cases, additional surgery may be necessary to treat complications or further tighten or reposition breast tissue.

How Much Does Gynecomastia Surgery Cost?

The cost of male breast reduction surgery depends on a variety of factors. At your consultation, Dr. Hua will provide you with details regarding the exact cost.
